The Cathedral open and Free

Anglican cathedrals were once perceived as remote and unwelcoming places where admission was charged to visitors. Frank Selwyn Macaulay Bennett, Dean of Chester Cathedral, 1920-37, changed all that declaring the Cathedral "open and free" to those Bennett called "pilgrims" (instead of visitors). During his tenure at Chester, Bennett was appointed to the Cathedrals Commission, wrote The Nature of a Cathedral, and lectured and consulted on cathedrals in the U.S. and Canada. By the time Bennett retired in 1937, Chester was in the black, repaired, and renovated. Bruce, a retired headmaster at Chester, died while Bennett's biography was in press.
